We are looking for a 3D Scanning/Point Layout Technician to capture accurate, existing conditions using 3D laser scanning and perform field layout for construction using model-based data. This role supports VDC, BIM, and field crews by translating coordinated models into real-world layout for hangers, equipment, equipment pads, and underground systems. Duties:

3D Laser Scanning & Reality Capture:

  • Perform on-site 3D laser scanning of buildings, structures, equipment, and site conditions
  • Set up and operate laser scanners, targets, and accessories safely and efficiently
  • Plan scan locations to ensure complete coverage and accurate results
  • Download, register, and manage point cloud data
  • Perform quality checks to verify accuracy, alignment, and completeness
  • Deliver registered point clouds in required formats for modeling and coordination

Field Layout & Point Layout

  • Perform layout using robotic total stations, layout lasers, or equivalent tools
  • Layout points for:
    • Hangers and inserts
    • Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment
    • Equipment pads and housekeeping pads
    • Sleeves, embeds, and penetrations
    • Underground utilities and system installs
  • Translate coordinated models and layout drawings into accurate field points
  • Verify layout against control points, benchmarks, and model data
  • Assist field supervision with layout planning and sequencing
  • Perform spot checks and as-built verification as required

Coordination & Documentation:

  • Work closely with VDC, BIM, and project teams to understand layout intent
  • Maintain clear, organized layout files and naming standards
  • Document layout activities and note field conditions or conflicts
  • Follow jobsite safety rules and site access requirements
  • Travel to project sites as needed

Skills & Experience:

  • Experience with 3D laser scanning and/or construction layout
  • Experience performing point layout for construction installations
  • Familiarity with point cloud software (Autodesk Recap or similar)
  • Ability to read and understand drawings, models, and layout plans
  • Experience with robotic total stations or layout software
  • Experience with Revit or other 3D modeling software (preferred)
  • Background in VDC, BIM, surveying, or construction layout (preferred)
  • Expereince with MEP, structural, or underground utility layout (preferred)

Requirements:

  • Experience with Microsoft Suite and other basic computer skills such as file management and data transfer
  • Ability to work on construction sites
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or in the field
  • Comfortable working in active construction environments
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry layout and scanning equipment
  • Ability to climb ladders, lifts, and stairs
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying site conditions

Schedule: Monday – Friday, Day Shift, 7:00am – 4:30pm

Location: Headquarters - Grand Rapids, MI. This position requires travel to various jobsites within the midwest region.
